A year in the life of the River Avon – Unlocking Warwick

Presented by Rick Thompson, Wildlife Author, television presenter, producer and editor

Many of us marvel at the wonders the River Avon offers as it wends its way through the countryside, villages and towns of Warwickshire. The river, its banks and surrounding habitats are home to a wide variety of species. The villages and towns are steeped in history and legend. And for many the Avon also provides opportunities for recreation, whether that’s fishing, paddling or simply lazing by its banks on a hot summer’s day.

In his latest book, ‘A River Avon Year’, Rick follows the 88-mile course of ‘Shakespeare’s Avon’ from its source in Naseby through the centre of England until it joins the Severn at Tewkesbury. Month by month he describes the wildlife along the way as the seasons change, and the folklore attached to some of the birds, plants and trees to be found in the Avon valley. The attractive riverside towns all have stories to tell, and the banks of the river have seen many bloody battles that have changed the course of English history and decided who would wear the crown.

In what promises to be a fascinating talk, Rick will share with us his observations and reflections of life on and around the Avon.

Rick will also be bringing signed copies of his books on the evening. Please note that we can only take cash for any purchases made.
