Guest Speaker: Phil Playford, Ecological Consultant
For the past six years, as part of his role as an ecological consultant, Phil has worked on numerous constructions projects where wildlife has had the potential of getting in the way of development work. When protected species are present on a site this can lead to delays and sometimes even stop a development in its tracks.
It’s a complex topic, with no easy answers. As we increasingly push wildlife to the margins, reducing their habitats and fragmenting their foraging grounds, Phil will discuss what can be done to achieve positive outcomes for badgers whilst meeting the needs of a growing population of humans; each vying to occupy the same space.
An update on our work in Warwickshire
It’s been very busy over the past few months. Badgers are very active creatures from spring through to the colder months of winter. As well as getting on with their own activities, they also face many challenges and threats so our phones and emails receive a steady flow of requests for help. This can involve anything from homeowners who have badgers in their gardens (often welcome but sometimes brock visitors can get up to mischief and cause problems) through to being called out to large developments to ensure construction work is not affecting setts and their inhabitants.
On top of this, there’s vaccinations, rescues, and releasing rehabilitated badgers (usually orphaned cubs) to new suitable setts.
We’ve also been out and about campaigning and lobbying to try and stop the cull.
Committee members Steve Hawkes and Denise Taylor will update you on badger activity over the past few months, accompanied by video and photographs of our local badgers.
We will hold our usual raffle on the evening. Donations of prizes are always welcome.
The doors will be open at 7.15 pm for a 7.30 pm prompt start, and we aim to finish between 9.30 pm and 10.00 pm.
